This week marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Montezuma Elementary – an Indiana Agriculture & Technology School.
On Tuesday, August 4, families, students, educators, community members, elected officials, volunteers, media, and partners gathered to celebrate the official ribbon cutting of the school. What began just months ago as a community determined to preserve local educational opportunities has become a thriving tuition-free public charter school serving students in Pre-K through 6th grade.
The celebration was more than the opening of a school building – it was a celebration of a community that came together to create new opportunities for its children.
The very next morning, on Wednesday, August 5, the doors officially opened for the first day of school.
Students arrived by car and aboard one of three expansive bus routes designed to make the school accessible for families throughout the area. They met their teachers, explored their classrooms, enjoyed free breakfast and lunch, learned school expectations, and celebrated with an energetic dance party led by School Leader Janine Sutton.
Students also got a preview of one of Montezuma Elementary’s signature learning opportunities: hands-on agriculture education with Mr. Colton McMullen, Indiana’s first elementary agriculture teacher. Agriculture education will become an exciting part of the student experience, encouraging curiosity, leadership, and real-world learning beginning in elementary school.
“This school exists because of this incredible community,” said Keith Marsh, Executive Director of Indiana Agriculture & Technology School, during the ribbon cutting ceremony. “Tonight is a celebration of what can happen when a community comes together with determination, hope, and an unwavering belief in its children.”
The opening of Montezuma Elementary represents months of collaboration between families, community members, volunteers, local leaders, and Indiana Agriculture & Technology School to ensure local students continue to have access to a high-quality elementary education close to home.
We are incredibly grateful to every family who has entrusted us with their children and to the many volunteers, partners, donors, and supporters who helped make this vision a reality.
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we look forward to watching our students learn, grow, and thrive.

Every dollar donated goes directly toward equipping classrooms with essential materials at the beginning of each semester, allowing teachers to focus on what they do best – educating students.
