At Indiana Agriculture & Technology School, we’re proud to celebrate students who pursue their passions both inside and outside the classroom. This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Drew Sherman, who recently captured his first National Midget Series victory at I-44 Speedway in Oklahoma City during his rookie season—a remarkable milestone in his racing career!
Drew’s love for racing began when he was just 5 years old. Coming from a racing family, his father was a race car driver before building race cars for young racers through their family business, Sherman Race Cars. The moment Drew climbed into a quarter midget, he knew he had found his passion.
Since then, Drew has raced across the country, competing and earning victories in Arizona, California, Texas, New Mexico, Illinois, Ohio, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Indiana. Today, he competes nationally in both the USAC and POWRi National Midget Series, racing against some of the sport’s top drivers.
One of Drew’s most memorable accomplishments came earlier this year when he raced at the legendary Indianapolis Motor Speedway. As the youngest driver in the field, he earned the best finish among the rookies and qualified for the feature event—an experience he describes as both inspiring and unforgettable.
While his racing accomplishments continue to grow, Drew knows that success starts in the classroom.
“Academics come first in our family. If I don’t keep my grades up, I don’t race.”
Balancing a national racing schedule with school requires discipline, organization, and strong time management. Drew works ahead on assignments, communicates with his teachers, and stays committed to maintaining excellent grades. He hopes to attend college after high school and earn a degree in Business, giving him opportunities both within and beyond the racing industry.
When asked what advice he’d give other students, Drew shared:
“Don’t be afraid to chase something that makes you different. Anything worthwhile takes hard work, patience, and commitment. Believe in yourself, learn from setbacks, and never stop working toward your goals.”
