The IATS Special Education Department recently attended a special education leadership conference focused on this year’s theme, “Collective Courage and Compliance: Making Sound Decisions in Complex Times.” The conference emphasized the importance of doing what is right for students before challenges become compliance concerns, while building strong systems, supporting teams, and making decisions that protect both students and schools.
One of the highlights of the conference was hearing keynote speaker Chris Singleton, who shared his powerful message of resilience, unity, and hope. His inspiring story reminded attendees of the importance of strengthening collaboration among educators, families, and communities to create a lasting impact for every student. His message centered on the belief that love is stronger, and that meaningful relationships are at the heart of student success.
Throughout the conference, our team participated in a variety of breakout sessions that provided practical strategies for supporting students and staff. Topics included leading with authenticity and purpose, fostering belonging and equity in special education, shifting from reactive interventions to proactive systems of support, coaching educators to become self-directed leaders, and building sustainable behavioral support systems that support both students and staff.

Additional sessions focused on addressing students’ social-emotional needs through Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), supporting struggling readers through structured literacy practices, and understanding legal standards related to Section 504, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Article 7, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
The conference reinforced our commitment to collaboration, proactive problem-solving, and continuous improvement as we work to ensure every student receives the support and opportunities they need to succeed.
